Facebook to change the name of Instagram and Whatsapp
Facebook will change the name of Instagram and Whatsapp.
Facebook confirmed that it is renaming its two most popular apps, Instagram and WhatsApp, to better disclose its ownership of the apps.
Facebook plans to add its name to both Instagram and WhatsApp, as politicians call for breaking up the social networking giant and the Federal Trade Commission investigates Facebook's acquisition of both companies.
Soon, Instagram will be known as "Instagram by Facebook", while WhatsApp will become "WhatsApp by Facebook".
The rebranding effort was uncovered Friday by reporters in The Information and was later confirmed by Facebook representatives.
"We want to be clearer about the products and services that are part of Facebook," a spokesperson told The Information .
Was the name written on the Facebook wall?
While it is unclear whether the measure is a government mandate from the FTC, an entity that, according to The Wall Street Journal was investigating Facebook's acquisition of the companies in a possible antitrust case, appears to be connected.
It is true that Facebook doesn't have much to gain by putting its name on apps: it's already a household name and has been associated with privacy scandals.
Putting Facebook's name on its two most popular apps certainly won't make those apps more popular than they already are and could possibly make users more wary about the security and privacy of those apps.
Facebook has yet to say when the changes will take effect, however, we will continue to monitor the situation as it develops. The changes will first be announced through mobile app updates.
