If you have a high-end smartphone from last year, it's easy for it to have 2 GB of RAM. But I'm sure many of you, or acquaintances, have Android smartphones that say they are very slow. It's usually because of the RAM memory. Here we are going to see how to expand the virtual RAM of your Android, so that it works better.

how to increase ram memory in android

When an Android smartphone is slow it can be for three reasons. On the one hand, the phone's memory might not have free space, so the smartphone slows down very considerably. On the other hand, the processor may not be high performance. It usually happens with single-core processors with a clock frequency of 800 MHz. They tend not to do very well with the most modern applications. But undoubtedly, one of the most common reasons why smartphones slow down is because of RAM. Applications stay running in the background, and we don't usually close them, this makes the RAM memory busy, and this is usually what causes system slowdowns. And we are not just talking about using an application, but the whole smartphone slows down. What can we do? Expand the virtual RAM memory.

Requirements

1.- A compatible kernel. Normally, it does not work with the kernel that comes from the factory. If we have installed CyanogenMod or any Custom ROM, it is almost certain that it will be compatible.

Root, or Superuser permissions, necessary to run the application we are going to use.

3.- BusyBox. To install BusyBox you only need to download this application, run it, and click on the Install button.

4.- SetCPU. This application will help us to check if we really have more Root.

5.- Swapper. It is the application that will create a Swap partition.

6.- Be aware that the process could damage the smartphone or SD card.

How it works

Before we start, let's explain how it works. We will not have more RAM after this process, so the benchmark tests will remain the same. However, what the Swap partition does is to store all the applications that are in the background on the SD card, or in the smartphone's memory. In this way, it frees up RAM memory, resulting in a much higher quality performance.

Procedure

1.- Download BusyBox and SetCPU, and install them. Once the BusyBox application is downloaded and installed, we run it, and we really install BusyBox. Actually, the app is just an installer, which once executed, installs this software on the system.

2.- Download Swapper, the application we will use to create the Swap partition. Once downloaded this application, we copy it to the smartphone memory.

3.- Install Swapper. We look for it in the phone memory and install it.

4.- We run Swapper, and we find the management screen of the application itself. It is not complicated at all, so the amount of options that we are going to find is small.

5.- Select the RAM memory we want to expand. The smaller our RAM memory is, the more we can expand it, but we should not exceed 2 GB. If we have 512 MB, we can expand another 500 or 600 MB. Now, when selecting the capacity to expand, we must take into account that we have to have twice the selected amount of free memory. For example, if we are going to expand the memory by 500 MB, we will have to have 1 GB free. 500 MB is what the Swap partition will occupy, and it must have at least another 500 MB free. Depending on the SD card category, the speed will be higher or lower.

6.- Select the Active Swap on Boot option, and click on the Save button. Now the Swap partition will be created. It is possible that in this step we are asked for the Superuser permissions, and we confirm. The process will run automatically.

7.- We check that the Swap partition has been created, going to the SD card files with a file explorer, and seeing if the ?swap.swp? file exists.

8.- Activate Swap. For it, we have to execute the application again, and deactivate the Active Swap on Boot checkbox. Pressing Save the app will close automatically. Again, we execute the application, and we check the box again, finalizing pressing Save.

9.- Run SetCPU and in the Info tab, look for SwapTotal, the amount that appears there must be the amount that we have selected when creating the partition.

Reminders

1.- When we restart the system, the Swap may no longer exist, so we will have to go back to the application, uncheck the Active Swap on Boot checkbox, press Save, run the app again, check the checkbox and press Save.

2.- If we want to connect the smartphone to a computer, we will have to disable Swap first.

If the kernel is not compatible, the process will simply not work, and in step 9 we will check that we do not have a Swap partition.

4.- The process may damage the smartphone or the SD card.
