What is a solid disk?

Let's start with a definition of a solid disk from Ramsas.com in 2009, in their 2009 entry What is a solid State Disk? :

SSD (Solid-State Drive) device: is a data storage device that uses flash memory for data storage, which replaces the magnetic disks of hard disk drives (HDD).?

Advantages and disadvantages of solid disks

  • Fast startup, uploading and file transfer
  • More reliable and durable than a hard disk
  • Multiple capacities with space for applications or hard disk replacement
  • A high reading speed.
  • High writing speed.
  • High speed access to information.
  • Ten times faster than HDD disks.
  • Better weight and smaller size.
  • Shorter troubleshooting time.

Here are the reasons why you should think about installing an SSD in your computer.

For practical purposes, SSDs are noticeably faster than HDDsAccording to our own tests, this is about five times faster. SSDs are capable of transferring data at speeds of up to 500 MB/s, while traditional hard disks typically deliver around 100 MB/s, many models even less.

Another important point is that the access speed to data, i.e. the time it takes to find a piece of data, is better on SSDs: between 0.05 and 0.23 milliseconds, compared to between 7 and 16 ms on mechanical hard disks. Of course, the shorter the access time, the better it is for our interests, and of course the difference is significantly wide.

ll of these improvements are due, in part, to the fact that SSDs do not use mechanical partsunlike the HDD in which a disk rotates at a certain speed and a needle moves to 'read' the data. The fact that they do not require movement for their operation also has other advantages, such as better shock tolerance, no significant noise emissions, lower heat generation and even lower power consumption, which is especially important for laptops.
